Aviation artist, William S. Phillips delights Gallery One collectors

On Saturday, April 14, William S. Phillips and his lovely wife, Kristi, returned to Gallery One in Mentor. Bill’s background as a firefighter and in the Air Force gave him lots of common ground with his collectors who share the same experiences. They’d gather at the signing table to meet him and get lost in long conversations. In his lecture, Bill spoke about his career as well as the Doolittle Raiders’ reunion he was en-route to at Dayton’s Wright Patterson Air Force Museum. As one of the world’s top aviation artists, William S. Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordanian Air Force to developed 16 major paintings, many of which now hang in the Royal Jordanian Air Force Museum in Amman. The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum presented a one-man show of Phillips' work. He was chosen to be a U.S. Navy combat artist and was awarded the Navy's Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association's Americanism Medal. In 2005, the USPS released his pane of 37 cent stamps - American Advances in Aviation. Another dimension to Bill’s talents lies in his nostalgic landscape scenes. He even created his own idyllic community, Phillips Bay, where picturesque and romantic images abound. In 2004, he was selected as Artist in Residence at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim — another indication of his versatility. Three of Phillips' works were chosen as part of the top 100 in Art for the Parks, and one painting received the Art History Award from the National Park Foundation. Two coffee table books of his works have been published.

April 28 brings Felicia Zavarella back to lecture about Georges Seurat.  Seurat's pointillism, called "chromo-luminarism" dramatically influenced the course of modern art.  Many of his works have a decidedly spring time feel.

The Symphony of Spring

All this warm weather inspires me to get out and garden or get back into a hiking routine; which brings to mind some of our best experiences with our artists!  Kristi and Bill Phillips were along a decade or so ago when we rafted the Colorado River for eight days with a small group that also included Carole and Jim Daly and Carole and James Christensen. We slept in tents along the river and shared fabulous food (everything tastes great when mixed with sand)...and even celebrated Bill's birthday with a gourmet dinner cooked in a fire pit.  (Our guide made us a "from scratch" cake every night!)

We bathed in the river.  Peed in the river.  Brushed our teeth with river water.  And made the best coffee I've ever had!

We still laugh when we think of our adventures...and we'd all happily do it again.

Our long association with so many of the artists we carry makes hosting their shows that much more exciting for us and for their collectors.  Bill and Kristi will be with us on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. when he’ll showcase his Americana and aviation art and give an informal lecture at 2 p.m.  This charming and talented artist is always entertaining.  We hope you can join us!
