Ever since man first painted on the walls of his cave, others have looked on in admiration, wondering the same thing: “How does he DO that?”

Now you can see for yourself! As Gallery One’s Official “Patrons of the Arfs,” Shayna and I are THRILLED to tell you about a new program our folks have just announced − Gallery One’s “Artist in Residence” Program.

You are warmly invited (and nobody’s warmer than us) to experience the thrill of watching a noted artist as she creates her newest masterpiece beginning on Saturday, September 27 from 1 until 3 p.m. This marks the latest in the series of special community events that our folks are sponsoring to thank you as we celebrate Gallery One’s 40th Anniversary. Periodically, noted artists will be setting up shop inside Gallery One so that you, your family and friends can watch and ask questions as they work.

As you know, we’ve hosted hundreds of artist shows over the years where you’ve met some of the world’s greatest contemporary artists. You’ve seen their finished artwork, but NOW you’ll have the chance to be a part of the creative process! We want to make art fun, enjoyable and accessible for as many people as possible. That’s why this program is a fabulous opportunity for art lovers, art students and aspiring artists. You’ll learn more about art as well as the techniques of the artists whom we feature.

Best of all, this event is FREE and open to the public. (Teachers with large groups of students are asked to call Gallery One in advance: 800-621-1141.) We’re located at 7003 Center Street (between Rtes. 2 and 90). Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday or by appointment. Greatness with a Brush: Artist David Utz!

After this past winter’s record-setting frigid temperatures over much of the nation, who didn’t dream of escaping to a warm tropical paradise? Even if island-hopping is not on the immediate agenda or in the budget, the imaginative art of David Utz presents an enticing option. 

Born in New England, David Utz grew up in Florida where his family had relocated. His father, the late Thornton Utz, a renowned fine artist and celebrated illustrator, recognized and nurtured his son’s artistic gifts.

Paying homage to the surrealists, pop artists and Henri Rousseau, David Utz has developed a distinctive style instantly recognizable and uniquely his own. An artist of many interests — painter, sculptor, portrait artist and graphic designer — his work incorporates the influences of early 20th century illustrators, the art of Central and South America, the bold graphics and vivid hues of the Caribbean, the contemporary look of 60s media art, as well as the sunny tropical climate of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

His internationally licensed work has won honors, awards and recognition and is found in a number of private collections. The vibrant creations of David Utz have also been displayed at the New York Art Exhibition. Get to know the man behind the palm fronds!

GG:  What is your favorite childhood memory?
David: The freedom that I found bicycling.

GG: When did you know that you were destined to become an artist?
David: Late in my teenage years I really became interested in graphic art and art direction, then in my twenties I started painting.

GG:  Who has most encouraged or inspired you?
David: My father, the wonderful person and excellent artist/illustrator.

GG:  What do you find to be the single most gratifying aspect of being an artist?
David: Creating something and not really knowing where it came from.

GG:   What is your preferred medium with which to paint and why is it your favorite?
David: I prefer acrylic because I work in dry brush and it's perfect for that.

GG:  What is your favorite pastime (other than painting)?
David: Traveling anywhere and movies!

GG: What is your favorite current film?
David:  The Wolf of Wall Street

GG:   Favorite vacation destination?  
David:  Europe

GG:   Favorite cuisine?
David:  Real northern Italian!

GG: What is it that you hope people will discover in your work?
David: Imagination and the joy of color.

Spring at Gallery One

I know it’s been a while, so I thought it just might be time to catch you up on everything here at Gallery One!

We have just completed our 23rd annual Masterworks in Miniature featuring over 125 outstanding images from some of America’s finest artists.   If you didn’t have a chance to view or purchase, our “after the show” is still open with “name your terms” layaway options.  Visit in person or online before you miss them.

Have you heard of Houzz.com?  According to their AboutUs page, “Houzz is the leading platform for home remodeling and design, providing people with everything they need to improve their homes from start to finish - online or from a mobile device.”  They are in the US and Canada and offer the world’s largest database of residential design along with a vibrant community of professionals willing and able to offer advice, inspiration and product information.  You’ll also find reviews of all the professionals you need to contract everything from initial design of simple redecorating or large building projects through the remodeling process.  You can create “Ideabooks” for each room of your home including the office and storage space, or look through all the landscaping photos.  There are so many design ideas you’ll browse for hours!  (fair warning)

released editions by Howard Terpning.   Quite simply, Howard Terpning is one of the most lauded painters of Western art. His awards are so numerous and he is honored with them so often, that to list them would require changing the count every few months. To name three would be to cite the highest prizes awarded to Western art: countless awards from the Cowboy Artists of America, the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, the National Academy of Western Art’s Prix de West and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gene Autry Museum. Why such praise? Passion, compassion, devotion and respect for his subject matter, extraordinary talent in palette and brushstroke, an exceptional ability to evoke emotion both in his paintings and from those viewing them — all this and more has made Terpning the "Storyteller of the Native American."  If you’ve never seen his work, at least browse online if you cannot make it into Gallery One.

It’s a brand new year; a great time to learn more about your favorite artists. (And if it’s cold where you are, there’s no better time to gaze at the exquisite floral creations of Jane Jones and learn a little more about what inspires this extraordinary artist.)

GG: Other than painting, what is your favorite pastime?
Jane: I love living and playing with my dogs and cats. They are always “in the moment” and happy to do anything together. And I love gardening, whether it is weeding or just enjoying the visual beauty, sounds and smells. One of the toughest things that I have to do is cutting the flowers from the plant. But once I get just the right light on them and the glass vase − well, I’m beside myself with excitement at the possibility of translating it into paint.
GG: In addition to your extensive art studies, you have a Bachelor of Science degree. How has this influenced your artwork?
Jane: The elegance of nature, from cells to ecosystems is so magnificent. Looking into the lives of cells, plants and animals gave me a glimpse into the awesome power of living things and an incredible respect for them. One day I decided to investigate flowers with a new close-up lens on my camera and saw a whole new and incredibly beautiful world of shape and movement, much like looking into a microscope. As a result, I began to paint large canvases with magnified flowers. 
GG: When did you know that you were destined to become an artist?
Jane: In 1985 I read the book Portrait of an Artist: A Biography of Georgia O'Keeffe, and as I was reading it, I found so many ideas and thoughts with which I identified. Her life and mine have very little in common, but we share the passion for art and a way of seeing the world, and realizing those things caused me to apply to art schools and make the commitment to follow that path. Or spend the rest of my life wishing that I had!
GG: Who has most encouraged or inspired you?
Jane: My husband has always encouraged me in every way. And having taught Art History for many years, I’ve gotten to know the lives and ideas of so many great artists and learned a lot different things them. Many of the problems and solutions in artists' lives and their work are the same no matter what the century.
GG: What is your preferred medium with which to paint and why is it your favorite?
Jane: I love, love, love oil paint. It is so smooth and sensual to work with, and compared to other media, it is really forgiving of mistakes. And I think it is the most beautiful medium because of the density of the pigment and how it interacts with light.
GG: You often include symbolic elements in your paintings that give them a spiritual dimension. What do you hope that people will discover in your work?
Jane: The beauty and value of nature. Beauty is something that people respond to; it is uplifting and hopeful…the desire for it is universal. Flowers occupy the elevated level of beauty, which moves us and evokes notes of aspiration to vibrate within us. There is something truly celebratory about flowers in sunlight. Light invests them with energy and liveliness.
GG: What do you find to be the single most gratifying aspect of being an artist?
Jane: There are several really gratifying things in my artistic life. I absolutely love the excitement of new ideas. They make the world new and exciting, and it seems like everything is possible. It’s such a great ride! And then it is so wonderful and exciting when new ideas are realized into new paintings, and I am happy with what I have created. The last part is when a viewer understands what I was communicating. Then the communication is complete.
